"Lavender Garden" 28" x 46" Cindy Grisdela

It’s just one week until the McLean Project for the Arts MPAartfest on Sunday, October 3. I’m busy getting everything sorted, tagged and ready to go! You can get more information and directions at the MPA website here. Notice the new hours this year–10:30 AM – 4:30 PM.

At right is a new piece I created especially for this show. It’s called Lavender Garden. It’s created using curved landscape piecing and heavily quilted with all sorts of different motifs. Right click on the image to see the stitching better. I had a great time deciding where to insert the wonky stripes  to add interest from a distance. My goal was to create a composition that was interesting to look at from across the room, for example, but also rewarded the viewer for taking a closer look with lots of detailed quilting.

I was inspired to make this piece by a picture I took several months ago of purple coneflowers in my garden. I loved the contrast of the purple flowers with the green of the grass behind them. I added a variety of other colors to the finished composition to give the impression of a landscape and I had the piece mounted on stretcher bars with a deep purple background.

I hope to see you on Sunday!  Mark your calendars for the Great Falls Studios 7th Annual Studio Tour October 16-17. For more information and a downloadable map, visit the Great Falls Studios website here and click on “Studio Tour.” You can also register to win a $50 gift certificate to use on the Tour.
