"Jazz Rhythms" Cindy Grisdela 2009

I’m thrilled to announce that “Jazz Rhythms” has been accepted into the ArT-QuILT ExPERIENCE exhibit at the Stone Quarry Hill Art Park in Cazenovia, NY. The show will run from June 12-July 31, 2011. The opening reception will be held on June 12. More information is available at the website above.

“Jazz Rhythms” is one of my favorite pieces because of the energy in the design. It’s also the first time I explored using “wonky stripes” as a serious design element.  The blocks were pieced improvisationally, so that each one would be different. I had initially thought I would tie the whole together with strips of red, but it just wasn’t very interesting that way, so I added the stripes as a unifying element.Irregular faced edges add spice to the composition.

This piece is hand quilted with large concentric circles to provide movement across the top and act as a counterpoint to the linear design.  If you right-click on the image you can see the quilting more clearly. It’s one of my largest designs as well, 56″ x 36″.

If you’re in the area this summer, be sure and stop by to see the exhibit and the outdoor sculpture in the park. I hope I’ll have a chance to get there to see it too!

This is beautiful. . .I love how there is a structure, but it’s irregular enough to have variation. You tread the boundary between structure/no structure very well. The colors are fabulous too.

Thank you so much, Ruth. I appreciate your insight–that’s a great way to look at this piece!
