"Playground" 2015 SAQA Benefit Auction Donation Cindy Grisdela

“Playground” 2015 SAQA Benefit Auction Donation Cindy Grisdela

I managed to finish my donation for the Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA) 2015 Benefit Auction just in time for the June 1 deadline this week.

Each year artists donate a 12″x12″ art quilt to be auctioned off in September to raise funds for SAQA’s mission to promote quilts as an art form and to support the group’s exhibits, publications and education efforts. This is the sixth year I’ve participated–each year I’ve donated a piece and bought another one.

I tried a new composition with “Playground”– putting the improv blocks that I love to create in an irregular arrangement in the square, tied together with an all-over echoing swirl motif in the stitching.

The quilts are divided into three groups, plus a fourth group that will be available for in-person purchase at the International Quilt Festival in Houston at the end of October. The auction begins on September 18, 2015 with a new twist. At 2 PM on that day, all quilts will be available for $1,000 each. On September 21, the price will drop on the first group of quilts to $750. On September 22 the price drops again at 2 PM to $550, then $350 the next day, $250 the day after that, then $150 and finally all remaining quilts will be available for $100 at 2 PM on September 25. The second group begins on September 28, and the third group on October 5.

The quilts are posted at this link on the SAQA website. Take a look and see which are your favorites!

I have a Pinterest board set up with some of my favorites that I’ll be adding to as we get closer to the event.

If you’re in the Chicago area, I’ll be exhibiting at the Old Town Art Fair there next weekend, June 13-14, from 10-6 each day. I hope to see you there!
