City Streets Triptych 2014 Cindy Grisdela

City Streets Triptych 2014 Cindy Grisdela

I showed my new piece, City Streets, in my booth at Craftboston Spring for the first time yesterday and it got rave reviews!

Each panel was created and quilted separately, but referencing the others. They are each mounted on 20″ x 20″ stretched canvas that I painted black, with wires on the back for hanging.

I’ve never tried to do a triptych before, but my studio mate Jennifer Duncan, who’s a mixed media painter, does them fairly frequently and I thought–why not give it a try?

To make things simpler, since I only had three weeks between the Atlanta show and

this one in Boston, I started with a concept I had used before–Abstract Skyline, which

you can see here.  I changed the color scheme and made it a little larger.

At right is a detail of the stitching. The challenge was to quilt each panel separately, but make the design flow from one to the other. If you right-click on the image, you’ll be able to see the stitching better. Since the composition is very linear and very vertical, I wanted the stitching to be more organic, so it flows in a wave of three different motifs from one panel to the next, sort of like traffic on a city street.

If you’re in the Boston area, you can see City Streets, plus lots more in person at the Craftboston show at the Cyclorama at the Boston Center for the Arts, 539 Tremont Street. We’re open from 10-6 today and 11-5 tomorrow. I’m in Booth 413 and I’d love to see you!
