Stained Glass 2013 Cindy Grisdela 36″ x 14″

I’m back from Baltimore–what a great show! It was an honor to be included among over 600 talented artists in so many different media.

Thank you to all the friends–old and new–who made the trip and stopped by my booth. It was great to see you!

I wanted to get some shots of the show itself, but didn’t have much of a chance to get out of my booth, so I’ll share the finished shot of my new Stained Glass quilt that I wrote about in process here last week.

If you right-click on the image, you’ll be able to see the stitching more clearly. This was an example of how interactive the process of adding texture to my work is. I had an idea of what I planned to do when I sat down to the sewing machine. I was going to keep it simple and stitch loops in the central motif and fans in the green borders. Instead, the quilting took on a life of its own and I did something I’ve never done before. I created different floating blocks of texture in the borders, alternating blocks of fans with a new design that turned into an echoing water swirl on the wider side and fans and seashells on the other. It was great fun and I’m really happy with the result. I’ll have to do more of this.

These long skinny pieces got such positive reviews at the show that I’ll be working on a new series that I hope to have on display at my next show–Craftboston Spring in Boston, MA April 19-21. Stay tuned!

I’m off today to give a lecture and trunk show of my quilts to the Mt. Vernon chapter of the Quilters Unlimited guild in Alexandria, VA. Should be a lot of fun!
