New Book Includes Three of My Quilts!

I’m excited to announce that a newly published book–500 Traditional Quilts–includes three of my quilts.

It’s a beautiful book with lots of inspiring images, curated by Karey Patterson Bresenhan. I’m honored to be in such wonderful company. I’ve known about this for a while now and it’s been tough to keep it to myself, but I wanted to wait until the book was out to post about it. It was a huge thrill to come home from my last show–Art in the High Desert in Oregon–to find my very own copy had been delivered!

Although my work may not be considered traditional in the strictest sense, it is undoubtedly influenced by tradition, since I spent many years creating quilts using well-known patterns and techniques before my work began to evolve into more contemporary, abstract designs.

The background of the image at left is one of the pieces in the book, Playing with Crayons. I consider this quilt one of the ones that started me on my contemporary journey.

Crayons is based on the traditional log cabin pattern, but I used an improvisational technique to make blocks that don’t have straight lines. It’s one of my favorite designs and it’s been exhibited and shown widely.

Also in the book is Playing with Colors, an improvisational take on the traditional Drunkard’s Path pattern that is part of the same series, using all the colors of the rainbow in cheerful designs that hopefully bring a smile to your face.

Both of these quilts have been shipped to Texas, where they will be part of a special exhibit illustrating the book at the prestigious Houston International Quilt Festival at the end of October. Then they will travel for a year or so to several other venues.

The third quilt in the book is Amber Harvest, which is also a variation on the traditional log cabin quilt. This piece is now in a private collection, but it has also been exhibited widely and won a Juror’s Choice award at the Art Quilts Lowell quilt show several years ago.

I’m thrilled to have my work selected for this book, as well as for the traveling exhibition. If you happen to be at the Houston show, let me know how they look–I won’t be able to be there this year because I’m exhibiting at the Washington Craft Show in Washington, DC the same weekend, October 31-November 2.
