"Neighbors on the Square" 2011 Cindy Grisdela

I finished the quilting on these two pieces this weekend and there’s quite a contrast in the textures. “Neighbors on the Square” at left has a curved fan motif to unify the center, surrounded by cloud-like curves. If you right-click on the image, you’ll be able to see the detail more clearly.

For “Box of Marbles” I decided to go with the simple grid idea. The Marbles

pieces are tough to add texture to without losing the design. I don’t really think there was any other way to do this one effectively. It’s interesting working with these simple lines–there’s quite a bit of thought that goes into how wide to space them so they don’t look too symmetrical and regular.

I do like the colors in these two pieces, although I’m not sure they will appeal to others! “Box of Marbles” reminds me of a hot summer day playing outside–maybe with a Popsicle to go with my marbles!

Both of these pieces are part of my project to create 30 quilt tops in 30 days in March 2011. They are all approximately 16″ x 20″ and use solid fabrics that are pieced, not fused. For more information on the project, click on “March 2011″ in the archives on the right.

All of them will be on display at the Great Falls Studios Studio Tour Saturday, October 15 and Sunday, October 16. Mark your calendars! Visit the website at the link above to download a brochure. Admission is free and it’s lots of fun!
