Poster for “A Sea of Sticks and Stones” Exhibit 2014

I spent most of the day Tuesday helping to hang a wonderful show at the US Geological Survey building in Reston, VA.

Titled “A Sea of Sticks and Stones,” it’s the first ever juried art show by Great Falls Studios outside Great Falls, VA, and I’m happy that three of my quilts were juried in! And one of them was included in the poster advertising the show–the one in the upper right.

The show runs through September 29, 2014 in the Art Hall at the USGS, located at 12201 Sunrise Valley Drive, Reston, VA. It’s open during business hours–8 AM – 5 PM Monday-Friday, and a photo ID is required to enter the building.

Below is my Shades of Autumn wall hanging next to paintings by my friends Jennifer Duncan on the right and Roberta Pruett Beasley on the left.

There will be an opening reception tomorrow, Friday September 5 from 4-6:30 pm. The juror will be there at 5:30 to give a short talk about the process of choosing the pieces for the show and to hand out awards. There will be light refreshments too.

It’s a very interesting show with a diverse mix of painting, photography, ceramics, sculpture, mixed media and fiber, of course. All relate to the theme of “sticks and stones” as appropriate for the mission of the US Geological Survey. And we got lots of positive comments from people in the building while we were hanging before the show was even up!

My other two pieces in the show are Autumn Forest and Aztec Autumn.

I submitted several other pieces, but it was interesting to me that the ones that were selected all use the same sort of technique—irregular stripes softened with curved lines. Doesn’t it look at little like sticks?

Yesterday I helped hang another show, but don’t have pictures yet–that will be another post!

I have a creativity break for a few weeks now that the summer shows are over before the fall ones start. Hopefully I can get a lot of new work finished!

For now, mark your calendars for the Great Falls Studios 2014 Studio Tour–this year it will be three days from Friday, October 17- Sunday, October 19 from 10-5 each day. I’ll be in the studio I share with 14 other artists located at 1144 Walker Road, Suite D in Great Falls.

And at the end of October I’ll be at the Washington Craft Show for the first time! Dates are Friday, October 31-Sunday, November 2 at the Convention Center in Washington, DC.

The next weekend, I’ll be at the Downtown Art Festival in my hometown of Gainesville, FL–Saturday November 8-Sunday, November 9.

Hope to see you soon!

This is great promotion for “A Sea of Sticks and Stones”. Friends and customers of Cindy who visit the exhibition will be delighted to see her work hanging there in this multi-media exhibit along with a special surprise on one of her pieces.

    Congratulations to you Cindy!
