It’s Day 3 of the Blog Tour for Adventures in Improv Quilts: Master Color, Design and Construction, and my friend Jenny Lyon–the Quilt Skipper–is the featured blogger today. Jenny is an artist, teacher, and author of Free Motion Quilting from Ordinary to Extraordinary.

We are both members of the Traveling Quilt Teacher tribe, and we get together whenever we’re teaching in the same venue. It’s fantastic that members of this group are willing to cooperate and help each other–I reviewed Jenny’s book when it came out a few years ago and now she’s returning the favor. Thanks Jenny! You can ready Jenny’s review at https://quiltskipper.com/2021/10/book-review-adventures-in-improv-quilts-by-cindy-grisdela/

Each weekday until Wednesday, October 20, 2021, different bloggers will be posting their perspective on the book. If you add a comment on any of the blogs, you’ll be entered to win an eBook copy of Adventures in Improv, generously donated by C&T Publishing.

The winners won’t be chosen until after the Tour ends, so if even you miss a day, you can still go back and participate.

Since Jenny is a free motion quilting guru and teacher, today’s featured quilt from the book is Metamorphosis, below.

This little quilt is a favorite of mine, although it sold right after I made it, so I didn’t get to live with it very long. It’s small–just 12″ square–and mounted on painted black canvas like a picture. I love this quilt because it’s the essence of Improv to me. I had some weirdly shaped leftover stripes from two larger projects that were too pretty to throw away, so I put them together as they were–with all their curves and wonkiness, to make this little piece. Then I free motion stitched a variety of motifs into the strips to add texture. You’ll find some stitching ideas in Adventures in Improv that range from very easy to a little more complex that you can try on your next Improv quilt!

Thanks for following along on the Blog Tour–I really appreciate all your comments!

Cindy, your work is SO inspiring and beautiful! I have enjoyed following you on IG. I struggle with not “trying” up my scraps but your work keeps me trying!

Thank you for your kind words! We all have our own relationships with scraps for sure.
